Economizer Types

 

If according to heating extension of the working fluid, economizers can be divided into non-boiling and boiling types.


1. Boiling economizers: the outlet water temperature not only can reach the surnatured temperature, but also can make some water vapourized, the proportion is about 10-15% of total feed water, not more than 20% in case of much flow resistance caused to the working fluid.


2. Non-boiling economizers: the outlet temperature is 20-25 degrees lower than the boiling point under pressure given.

 

Most medium-pressure boilers use boiling-type economizers. Here’s why: in medium-pressure setups, water has a high latent heat of vaporization, while the heat required to warm the water itself is low. So, it’s necessary to let some water vaporize in the economizer—this prevents unstable combustion in the furnace and stops issues like higher metal usage in heating surfaces (such as superheaters) that would happen if the flue gas outlet temperature gets too low. Plus, it helps the economizer work as it should.
 
Superhigh-pressure boilers, though, mostly use non-boiling economizers. The reason is: when pressure is higher, water’s latent heat of vaporization drops, but the heat needed to warm the water increases. So, some water needs to be heated in the water wall panels instead. This stops slag buildup on the heating surfaces (both inside the furnace and at the furnace outlet) that would occur if the furnace and flue gas outlet temperatures get too high. That’s why superhigh-pressure boilers usually go with non-boiling economizers.
 
The key factor for choosing an economizer type is the boiler’s parameters. When boiler parameters differ, the ratio of heat needed to warm the working fluid across its three stages changes too. This means the setup of the three heating surfaces has to adjust accordingly. For large, high-parameter units, the heat needed for evaporation is lower—but the heat needed to warm the water, superheat the steam, and reheat the steam is much higher. That’s why non-boiling economizers are the main choice for superhigh-pressure unit boilers.

 

Functions

 

The term "economizer" comes from its original purpose: using waste heat from flue gas to warm feedwater. This lowers exhaust temperatures, boosts boiler efficiency, and cuts fuel use—hence the name.
When a boiler uses an economizer, feedwater is preheated before reaching the evaporation heating surface. This reduces both the heat needed at the evaporation stage and the required heating area.
Economizers are arranged in a countercurrent flow. The average temperature of the working fluid is lower than that of saturated water, and forced flow allows for the use of thin-walled, small-diameter tubes. The overall structure is also compact. As a result, both the heat transfer temperature difference and coefficient are higher than those of convection evaporation tube bundles operating in the same flue gas temperature range. Replacing such tube bundles with economizers significantly reduces metal usage.
Additionally, preheated feedwater entering the steam drum reduces the temperature difference between the water and the drum wall, ultimately lowering the drum’s thermal stress.
 
For these reasons, economizers have become critical components in modern boilers. Their key functions can be summarized as follows:


1. fuel saving: the economizers are placed at the rear part of boilers. This way can decrease the smoke and gas temperatures, thus to save fuels.


2.improve the working conditions of steam drums: due to economizers, the feed water temperature is increased when entering the steam drum. It reduces the temperature difference between the feed water and steam drum wall as well as steam drum thermal stress, so that it improve the working conditions of steam drums and increase the service life.


3.reduce the boiler manufacturing cost: for the feed water is heated in the boiler economizers. The use of low temperature spare parts as boiler economizers to replace some of high-priced high temperature water wall panels reduces the cost to manufacture boilers.

 

There are three stages from the feed water in the boiler heated into superheated steam:feed water preheating, evaporation, and superheating. The three stages are finished on three different heating surfaces. The boiler steam and water circuit are composed of the three different heating surfaces as well as their connecting pipes. Boiler economizers are one of them, and it is right the equipment to preheat the feed water. Thus, it is the heating surface with the lowest temperature for boiler working fluid in the boiler steam and water circuit. The working fluid passing through this equipment is monophasic water(non-boiling economizer).
